A coworker of mine recently started selling apple iPhones for ridiculous sums of money. He sits about 10 feet away from me and is very vocal so most people in our general vicinity knows his business so when he came in last Friday we all knew he was quite cashy. Some of his friends in the office were troubling him that somebody might rob him and one guy even said it was too late, he already sent the guy to do it. Needless to say when he came in on Monday morning he told us he got robbed at gun point over the weekend.
He was in town on his way to the airport with 1/4 million in cash cool under his gym bag in his car and they held him up took the cash and two cell phones from him but left him, his car and his mac notebook to leave unharmed... that is a bit too coincidental for me to handle.
As I have grown more paranoid over the last few years this is how much they would have lifted off of me.. a cool $150. They would have been so pissed they would have probably taken my car to make up for the rest but insurance should cover that. I'm not sure what $150 would buy but I pretty much use my credit cards for everything. I know of a few friends and my sister use this no money approach and it is a pain to get them to pay me back monies owed to me as they always show me the moth flying out their wallet/purse when they say "I don't use cash". Bastards.
I am still amazed at how quickly he got over it though, the only time he seemed upset(understandably) about it was when a coworker was teasing him and laughing about it. Although I wasn't pissed for long either after they stole some stuff from my place last year. Thankfully in that incident my company only charged me about $25,000 for carelessly leaving the laptop in the car so my losses totalled maybe $40k at most. You live and you learn.

Well he still has his life..
Must suck to lose so much money though, 1/4 mill...
The things I could do with that.
Man...I'm really sorry for him but why brag to the whole flipping world that you have that much cash on you and then drive around with it in your car??
And after being robbed once of about $5,000 a few years ago I no longer walk around with cash. If I have $150 on me I have nuff! :)
I have $20 in my wallet. That's about as flush as I get.
thats what happens when people chat about their business too much....sorry for him though.....you know how many shoes that could buy :-)
Seriously though, i agree with the little or no cash policy....sometimes to my detriment when you are somewhere that dont take plastic!!!
I'll walk with a few thousand on occasion... but 250K? Not a hell! I hate that i have an expensive phone!
Sorry that happened to him, but he should be a bit more discreet about his personal business from now on.
Recently, I've started using my debit card more instead of cash (I've avoided getting a credit card). Thing is, I always have to ensure that they punch in the correct amount. In one situation, the lady added an extra '0'. Thank God, she caught on to the error in time.
bwoy Ann (MobayDP), when you delurk you really delurk :p
what kind of phone do you have bc?
I don't like the debit card thing as they banks charge you for it.. well my bank atleast.
Adrian, if they stuck you up and all you had was $150, They would probably put a hurtin' on you! The minimum you would get was a couple of gun butt! The max? Well, we wouldn't be readin' here no more...
Perhaps they wouldn't do anything to you though, because they would probably decide to just kidnap you and hold you for ransom.
"Quite cashy"...That's funny. Can I use that? You know, Oprah is reported to be quite cashy too.
That's a hell of a lot of money to be carrying on your person in the first place. Brother needs to invest in a ATM card. I hear they are free.
That doesn't sound like a coincidence at all, someone knew he was packing that cash!
I'm the same as you, credit card all the way and when I'm making the payment it's by cheque. I walk with only a small amount of cash $1G the most at times.
I keep thinking these are typos, but k and g don't leave too much to the imagination. Ah, but wait. I just figured out these are not U.S. dollars.
ditto with what stunner said. i live by credit card n debit card. hate walking with exccessive cash... um.. and that was definatly pre-med robbery by someone that knows him.
Thats a lot of money even in JA dollars. But you know Jamaica getting from bad to worse when a man can get robbed at gun point and it seems so ho hum.
what's he doing with a quarter mil in his gym bag....
i feel sorry for anyone trying to rob me...i usually have about $5 on my purse....
it may not have been a coinkedink, but if he's so brash there's no way to figure who did it. glad he lived to tell it & hope he learned to SHUT de HECK up!
i knew a dude who worked in a hood barbershop & it was "protocol" to keep enough money on his person so there'd be enough not to piss the robber off...i thought that was a DAYUM shame to have to exist that way.
great intro to your spot! Saw u over at GC's place:-)
@mb I've thought about the ransom situation.. its a good thing they don't do that much out here or I'd be a whole lot more paranoid.
@Jessica I think it works out to $3000 - $4000usd
@fiyah whats the man to do about it? no sense in beating himself up over it, it's water under the bridge now.
@capcity they call that protection money here in Jamaica.. it is such a shame.
another shame is that he is still as loud with his business as ever, sounds like he is buying a car soon lol
how much was he selling the iphone for?
Adrian I have a Pearl... I keep it hidden in my pocket :)
